Carmen Goitiandia

Carmen was born in 1941 in Abadiano, Bizkaia, to Andres Uruburu and Gregoria Erdoita.  She describes her early school experiences: walking the 2km distance with her brother, having to learn Spanish, playing with the other boys and girls in town, and enjoying math and science.  There was so much work to do on the family baserri that Carmen never left the house for pay until her marriage at the age of 22.  She was responsible for bringing produce to the Eibar market, working the fields, and tending to the farm animals.

Carmen recalls meeting her husband Sabino Goitiandia in Spain, and flying to Idaho to marry him in Boise a few years later.  It took her a while to adjust to life in America--for one thing, the houses were all so small!  But adjust she did, and very well, finding a job cleaning houses, learning to speak English, and raising her own family.  She even learned how to drive early on so that she could take her son and daughter to their activities!

Participating in the Idaho Basque community gives Carmen a great deal of pleasure, and she and Sabino can often be found at the Basque Center in Boise, at Basque picnics, and helping out friends who don't speak English.  She has not decided whether or not to become a US citizen, and still enjoys traveling to the Basque country to visit family and friends.
